Gifted and Talented
Darla Dunn welcomes you to G/T at Cooper North Elementary.

I am honored to have the opportunity to serve your child and to encourage thinking in a different way.

The Lubbock Cooper Elementary G/T program is a weekly pull-out class for grade levels first through fifth grades.  A kindergarten pull-out class is added by March after testing in the spring.

Gifted and talented students in Lubbock-Cooper ISD are defined as those students who have been identified through a specific screening and selection process in the areas of general intellectual ability or specific academic aptitude.  This is evidenced by their performance on learning potential tests, achievement tests, classroom performance, and observed behaviors.  The LCISD Gifted and Talented Program is based upon criteria set according to guidelines of the Texas Education Agency.

PRESENTATION OF AN "Evening with Tut"
All GT students from the three elementary schools will present a dramatic documentary of the discovery of Tut's tomb on May 16 at 6:30 PM at the Performance Arts Center.  On display will be replicas of some of the artifacts found in his burial place.  Everyone is welcome to attend. Click on the slideshow link above for a preview of items to be on display.
VISIT TO TEXAS TECH INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL CENTER
All Lubbock-Cooper GT students were guests of the cultural center on the Texas Tech campus.  For two hours, students were involved in hands-on activities related to ancient Egypt.  Making a cartouche using the student's name and doing map work for an Egyptian backpack were some of the experiences for each student.

Artifacts from Egypt were on display as were examples of clothing from that prehistoric period of time.
CARBON 14 DATING SCIENCE LAB VISIT
GT fourth and fifth grade students from North Elementary visited Randy Hanfeld's high school science lab to add to their previous classroom learning about how once living artifacts are dated using carbon 14.  Pictures from this visit posted above on slideshow.

WHAT MAKES CURRICULUM GT?
The answer to above question is depth and complexity.
WHAT IS DEPTH AND COMPLEXITY?
Depth and complexity are two qualities of extension looking at subject matter in different way.  Depth includes the following:   language or vocabulary of subject at hand; details or critical attributes and characteristic features; finding patterns or recurring ideas and events; and looking for the big ideas or truths from a study.  Later we will add depth extensions of trends, rules, ethics, and unanswered questions.

Complexity qualities of extension involve looking at issues from different points of view, over time, and looking across disciplines (language, math, science, social studies, etc.).

So in a "nutshell," GT thinking is analytical and evaluative thinking as students learn to think and talk with depth and complexity.
